UN Partition Plan
In 1947, the UN General Assembly passed Resolution 181, which suggested dividing British-controlled Palestine into a Jewish state on 56% of the land and an Arab state on the remaining 44%, with Jerusalem as an international city. At this time, Jews — the vast majority of whom had immigrated during the past few decades — made up around ⅓ of the population and owned less than 6% of the land. This plan was widely rejected by Palestinians.
